Gus, student volunteer, handing out a mosquito net

In Kenya, 98 children die from malaria every day
The malaria carrying mosquito is only active at night, usually after 10pm so sleeping under a net is very effective against malaria. A treated net for a young child costs less than 1 USD, but in rural areas as many as 80% of homes are still without nets.

In 2006, Community Outreach distributed 255 treated nets at two schools in Bunyore. In 2007, 265 nets were distributed to households with children under 5 and pregnant mothers. In June 2008, ConnectSwiss donated 400 nets. More...

Take nothing for granted
In 2008, field workers went door to door in Emurembe village to identify and then distribute mosquito nets to families with children under 5. During the distribution, each family was asked whether they knew how to use a net; field workers told them to hang their nets over the beds of the children. During follow up visits a month later, one field worker found a family had indeed hung the net over the bed of their child. It was hanging neatly on a nail - still sealed in the plastic packet unopened. Following up is important!
