We
don't charge for water
In Bunyore, the average
distance from one household to a source of water is 1km. The
average consumption of water in Kenya is less than 2 litres a day
per person for all their
needs. Many man-hours are spent just getting water from, in
most cases, polluted rivers or unprotected springs. To address
this, Community Outreach has opened 13 hand-dug wells. The wells
are open to the public free of charge and Community Outreach
maintains the wells under the supervision of a Kenyan civil
engineer. |
Why
Community Outreach doesn't charge for water:
Water is a human right. When 80% of the people do not have enough
food to eat, even asking them for 1 cent is enough to send some of
them back to the streams to fetch contaminated water which costs
them nothing. While Community Outreach currently maintains the
wells, we will work with local water committees in future to host fund raising events.
Daily water from the wells will always remain free of charge and
accessible to all. |
